Tolu

Chocolate Bar

Packaging Design

Project synopsis

This design was based focusing on a country that is part of the fair trade movement, single origin, and has potentially organic farms. Based from Indonesia’s North Sumatra, I researched the Toba Batak indigenous group. For a family owned and operated chocolate business, limiting costs while maximizing message is pivotal. The tribe is rooted strongly in their culture, with rich artistic tradition. Their artwork features bold colors and strong symmetrical patterns. I sampled this highly symmetrical sub style in order to develop a graphic die-cut which peeks through to a high contrast and brightly colored paper. The design and front information is comprised of a screen print overlay.

Below is shown the ingredient inspiration for chocolate flavors and Batak carving inspiration for graphic motif. Far right bottom image is Tolu represented in the Batak language, which is abstracted on the front of the final package.
